This project explores new materials and working principles for high-performance micromechanical actuators in view of applications in the growing field of micro and nanorobotics. We are particularly focused on VO2, an oxide compound with extraordinary electrical, optical and mechanical properties. Its change of lattice parameters across its metal-insulator transition at 68 °C makes this material particularly appealing for actuation at micro and nanoscale.
